Unassuming sophistication, understated elegance and personalised customer serviced rallying the best you will find in the world. It is not hard to see how The Upper House is currently the number one luxury hotel in China and the number three top luxury hotel in Asia.
The experience started three days out from arrival with a welcome email from the customer experience team asking everything from arrival transfers needs, to interests and hobbies, plans for our time in Hong Kong and anything further they could possibly help with through to the arrival where we were whisked away to our room for an in-room paperless check-in experience and room tour.
The next few days proved how even a hotel that has not had any major renovations in the 10 years it has been running could contest the number one spot in the country.
The in-room luxury of incredible sweeping mountain views, or watching the sun set over the city and harbour while soaking in the bathtub with a drink in hand from the ridiculously well-stocked ‘Maxi Bar’ or relaxing with a book while perched on the window seat which proves for some of the best views I experienced in Hong Kong.
The hotel has a fleet of BMW cars they use for city drop-offs, airport transfer or shuttling visitors to their desired destinations during their stay. They are on a first-come, first-serve basis but if booked out the hotel will promptly help organise an alternative transfer method for you.
In line with the paperless check-in procedure all of the facilities within the room were controlled by the touch of a finger with remotes. From the sheer and blackout blinds to the do not disturb alert through to every light and television, we had complete control of the entire suite while kicking back on the oversized lounge.
Sharing a pool with an adjacent building, which the customer experience team could have assisted with access had we wished, it would be easy to assume that the hotel may have limited areas for relaxing. Walking through the glass doors off the ground floor lift, we found a stylish grassed terrace decked with comfortable seating, loungers, greenery in every nook and cranny, lanterns and fairy lights creating a tropical oasis in the centre of a bustling city. They also offer complimentary yoga on The Lawn over the weekend if you are willing to pull yourself away from your suite early in the morning.
The Café Gray and Bar offers panoramic city views from the 49th floor while sipping on a Gin and tonic or indulging in a three-course dinner and wine pairing.
Hong Kong has one of the lowest average living spaces in the world so the idea of having a 1230 square foot room when space is so valuable to hotels felt like complete luxury.
The bathrooms were designed to make each guest feel like they had a luxurious, open plan spa within the privacy of their own room. All featuring an incredible freestanding limestone bathtub situated to take advantage of the stunning city views out of the floor to ceiling windows.
The Upper House occupies the upper section of the high rise building that houses the JW Marriott. Starting on the 38th floor through to the 49th and final floor the location ensures all suites have breathtaking views of Hong Kong.
The location is faultless and within two minutes’ walk, you are surrounded by the endless restaurants and shops of Pacific Place shopping complex along with the MTR to easily get you around the city from the doorstep of the hotel.
During our stay, we had not made many plans and after a conversation with The Director of Sales, Mervyn, we set out to explore Shelley street and Soho with a list of must-visit restaurants. The personal recommendations and advice ended up forming the best memories of our time in Hong Kong.
It is hard to imagine a brand being able to replicate the standard of service and following through with their promise of creating surprising, memorable and intoxicating experiences for each guest but from the time I spent at The Upper House and the passion each and every staff member spoke about their ‘House’ it does not surprise me that they are able to accomplish this throughout their collection.
The House Collective runs all four of their properties by the Philosophy of impeccable modern luxury with warm, friendly and efficient service. Individuality and spontaneity are at the heart of everything they do.
Whether it be a business trip, a family vacation, a stopover on the way to Europe or a weekend away shopping, The Upper House is an absolute must-have experience when visiting Hong Kong.
Architect Andre Fu has successfully created a relaxed, stylish and luxurious oasis in the centre of one of the busiest cities in the world. The intimate yet personal service proves how smaller boutique hotels such as The Upper House can rival the larger hotel chains of the world and take out the number one spot.
